Building columns and nerves

The rope node have to be mastered to give strength to the arch.

The basic element of a cane structure is an arch, that is built with the interlocking of two columns. Each column is made of dozens of canes with specific shapes and thickness placed together with the help of ropes in a spiral way to give its strength and to keep the continuous thickness.

This week saw some improvements in the weather and, still cheerful, the students continued with building the columns before beginning to connect them up near the structure. By the end of the second week we had all the arches finished ready to start mounting on Monday.

The first nerves, the substructures of a cane building, were also almost

ready for mounting.

The individual canes are grouped together in a technical way to perform the column.

The tip of each part of each of the two columns that constitute the arch is split to interlock, making a strong key that has roughly the same thickness of the rest of the column element.

Arch elements identifyed.
